Runter vom Gas – Unfallatlas
Scrollytelling application for the German road safety campaign “Runter vom Gas”: six chapters tell the story behind the national accident statistics – with a scroll-driven map video, video testimonials and comparison figures for the visitor’s own federal state. Live since 2021, updated every year since.
The challenge
For the “Runter vom Gas” campaign, Germany’s accident statistics were not to appear as a wall of numbers but as a story you watch unfold. The brief called for an application that breaks national figures down to the visitor’s own federal state, gives those affected a voice, and embeds into the existing campaign website – smoothly, on every device.
The solution
A WordPress-based scrollytelling piece, embedded into the campaign website. Six chapters cover casualties and fatalities, accident causes, modes of transport, a comparison of cities and the trend since 1970.
– A map video instead of a map library: the aerial footage does not simply play, its timeline is tied to vertical scrolling – built with ScrollMagic and GSAP. That avoids third-party map tiles and the data they would leak.
– Personal figures: visitors pick their federal state before they start. The choice is passed to the embedded application and surfaces the matching comparison figure in every chapter.
– Custom page-builder elements for the chapter modules, so figures, copy and videos can be swapped without touching code.
– Video testimonials and a knowledge quiz break up the run of statistics.
