Accessibility · WCAG 2.2 AA & BFSG

Get an accessible website — WCAG 2.2 AA, compliant with the German BFSG.

I make WordPress and Shopify sites accessible: audit, implementation and documentation to WCAG 2.2 AA. For shops and B2C websites in Germany this has been mandatory since 28 June 2025 (BFSG) — for everyone else it is a gain in quality and trust.

The problem

Since 28 June 2025, accessibility is mandatory for many websites in Germany.

The German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) requires online shops, booking and B2C service websites to be digitally accessible. The benchmark is EN 301 549, which in practice points to WCAG 2.2 AA. Without it you risk warning letters and fines — but above all you exclude people who cannot see, hear or use a mouse. I audit your site, remove the barriers and document the result in a way you can show.

How it works

What you get

From assessment to documentation — four building blocks that make your site measurably accessible.

Audit to WCAG 2.2 AA

Automated checks (Lighthouse/axe) plus a manual keyboard and screen reader walkthrough. You get a prioritised list of concrete barriers — not a 200-page PDF for the drawer.

Fixes in the code

I fix the barriers directly: contrast, focus order, keyboard operation, semantic HTML, ARIA only where needed. In WordPress and Shopify, cleanly in the theme — no overlay plugin.

Documentation & statement

A documented before/after state and, where required, an accessibility statement. Solid evidence for your customers and the authorities.

No overlay tricks

Automated accessibility overlays don't solve the problem — they paper over it, and both affected users and courts reject them. I build accessibility into the substance of the site.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The key answers on the BFSG, WCAG and implementation — at a glance.

Is accessibility mandatory for my website?

Since 28 June 2025, the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) requires many B2C websites and online shops to be digitally accessible — for example in e-commerce, banking, booking and passenger transport. Micro-enterprises can be exempt for certain services. If in doubt, I will check your specific case.

What does WCAG 2.2 AA actually mean?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines are the international standard for accessible websites. “AA” is the middle, practically decisive level — it covers contrast, keyboard operation, screen reader support, understandable forms and more. The German BFSG and BITV are based on it.

Isn't an accessibility overlay plugin enough?

No. Overlays — widgets that “repair” a page via JavaScript after the fact — don’t solve the problems reliably, sometimes even interfere with assistive technology, and are rejected by advocacy groups and courts alike. Real accessibility is built into the markup and the design, not switched on.

Can an existing WordPress or Shopify site be made accessible?

Yes. I work directly in the theme — the block theme in WordPress, the Liquid theme in Shopify. I audit existing sites, fix the barriers and re-test. A complete relaunch is usually not necessary.

How does a project work and what does it cost?

It starts with an audit that clarifies the current state and the effort involved. Then implementation by priority, and documentation of the result. Scope and price depend on the size and state of your site — send me a short email with a link, and you will get an honest assessment within one working day.
